It might imply venturing outdoor on January First accompanied by a storm of gulls choosing by means of frozen rubbish, or meditating on the calls of geese, geese, and finches throughout a chilly, misty daybreak. Or, it might imply searching the window and ticking a flock of Crimson-fronted Parakeets on a sunny, windblown day. The latter is how I started 2019 in Costa Rica and I’m grateful. Since that first day, a mixture of guiding and random birding throughout lower than three weeks has introduced me to greater than 300 species. I’m additionally happy that a number of of these are additionally key targets essential to succeed in the 700 species my companion and I are capturing for.

Crimson-fronted Parakeets present pink and yellow on their underwings as they fly above the cities and cities of Costa Rica’s Central Valley.

Patrick O’Donnell turned a birder on the age of seven after seeing books about birds within the Niagara Falls, New York public library. Though watching hundreds of gulls within the Niagara Gorge was chic, extra chook species (and hotter climate) ultimately introduced him to Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and different very birdy tropical locations. A biologist by coaching, he has labored on bird-related tasks in Colorado, Washington, Peru, and different locales, and has guided birders in Peru, Ecuador, and Costa Rica. Lately, he lives in Costa Rica the place he juggles guiding, freelance writing, creating fowl apps for Costa Rica and Panama, posting on his Costa Rica birding weblog, and discussing dinosaurs together with his younger daughter.
